I'm, running a facebook application, has 9,000 users and is growing at around 800-1000 a day. My site is pretty database intensive. It's currently hosted on a $7 a month shared hosting, so I obviously need something better. I'm told I should probably go with a VPS which is going to cost me $40-$75 a month (I'de need to get one that's managed). Futurehosting.biz has one for $35 a month, they were recommended to me. There just seems to be so many, not sure which one I should go with.

Any recommendations you have would be appreciated. I think that webintellects has some decent VPS hosting plans. Take a look at Lunarpages VPS plans as well. Both companies claim they provide plenty of space and bandwidth.

I really recommend LiquidWeb, their support is great, they offer management, have 24 hours phone support. I always keep at least one server with them and i have been a customer for over 5 years.

At the rate you are going, I would transfer your site to a VPS (or even a dedicated server) as soon as possible. Shared hosts can't take that kind of growth.

For VPS, I suggest knownhost.com. I have an account with them for a dating network that I run. Overall, I am satisfied with their service. Long ago, the network was also booted from a shared environment for using up too much CPU and RAM on the server.

I've read good things about servint as a VPS provider as well.

However, I would look at a VPS as more of a way to avoid a surprise suspension (common enough when it comes to shared hosting accounts using lots of server resources), and less as a way to "get something better". Well managed shared hosting should result in better performance, as a VPS comes with some overhead.

I also recommend Liquid Web, I have been a very satisfied customer for over a year now after a few bad experiences in shared hosting.

Stable as a rock, great support, 2 tiers of managed VPS (discount rate with the web hosting talk code), and best of all you can get someone on the phone! That was a first for me.

I am not nor do I desire to be a linux server admin. So one could argue that I'm in over my head with a VPS.

But LW has been perfect for me. Every time something goes haywire (and it inevitably will) They were right on top of it and straightened it out at no extra cost - when technically they really didn't have to. They could have said it's not their problem or charged me labor etc., but that's not how they roll. I personally think their definition of "managed" VPS is among the most generous in the industry.

But that is just one guy's opinion... You should call the 800 number and relay your pre-sales concerns to their staff in order to make an informed decision.

PS - If you do decide to give it a try, make sure you ask for the web hosting talk discount. (-$10/month, permanent).
